The Department of Statistics, Gauhati University was established in January 26, 1948. The University had started with a few Departments and Mathematics and Statistics (combined) was one of them. The Department had started under the Headship of Professor V.D. Thawani. Initially it started with under graduate courses and the PG courses commenced in 1949. In the year 1963, under the Headship of Professor Jyotiprasad Medhi, Emeritus Professor, the independent ‘Department of Statistics’ was established. Under his supervision, the department started taking strides towards becoming a centre of excellence for training on Statistics. Since then, it has continued to be a personification of Statistics education and research activities in the whole of the North Eastern India. The department was served by the mentors of the subject like Professor V. S. Huzurbazar, Professor Sudhendu Biswas, Professor Zachavia, Professor N. U. Probhu, Professor S. M. Sinha, Professor S. B. Nandi, Professor A. K. Palit, Professor S. B. Nag, Professor Arun Borthakur and other prominent members. The first Ph.D. scholar of the Department was Professor Tata Subba Rao, Emeritus Professor of Statistics in the school of Mathematics, University Of Manchester, who carried out his research under the supervision of Professor Jyotiprasad Medhi. Their untiring efforts and sincerity produced many renowned persons who are rendering their services towards our Nation.


Since its inception, the department has remained committed to its goal of imparting advanced training on Statistical techniques to study data in relation to Natural, Biological and Social phenomena. The acquisition of data in a systematic manner, its analysis and interpretation are based on Statistical methods and it has been the aim of the department to provide training on this aspect. The department is dedicated to offering high quality training to its student and conducting research on a set of multi dimensional emerging issues having high impact in terms of theoretical interest as well as social ramifications. The department attracts top graduate students from around the region.Many of our recently passed out students are suitably employed in various government, government undertaking and private sector jobs. Some of our postgraduate students and research scholars are established around the world in different positions. In addition to its commitment towards core Statistics, the department maintains strong interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside of academia. At present, the department has 3 Professors, 4 Assistant Professors, 1 Post doctoral scholar, 23 Research Scholars and about 60 post graduate students. The department also has the distinction of housing a Population Research Centre among all the Statistics departments in the North Eastern India region. The department has received funding from DST(FIST) and UGC under its Special assistance programme (SAP):DRS-I. Currently, it  is receiving fund under DST(FIST).

1.    Post Graduate Programmes:

a)    Name of the Programme: Master of Science in Statistics

A masters programme in Statistics offered by Gauhati University is so designed that after the completion of the course the students are expected to acquire adequate knowledge of the subject and also able to apply it to the problems in different branches of Science, Sociology, Humanities, Management, Media and other allied sciences. Moreover the students will be acquainted with a number of computer languages and software, which help the students for electronic data processing using statistics.

b)    Duration of the Programme: 4-Semesters, 2-Years

c)    Intake Capacity: 30 (Thirty)

d)    Admission Process:

i)    There will be a written examination consisting of objective and descriptive questions. The total marks of the written examination will be 100 out of which 70 marks will be carried by the Multiple Choice Question (MCQ). The remaining 30 marks shall be for descriptive questions.

Merit list will be prepared as per Gauhati University rule.

The syllabus for the written examination will be based on the T.D.C. Statistics Major syllabus of Gauhati University.

ii)   The medium of the examination shall be in English.

2. Research Programmes:

a) M.Phil. in Statistics: The primary objective of this programme is to inculcate scientific temperament among the research scholars with rigorous teaching and training. Emphasis is given for critical literature review of the problem(s) to identify new research problems, also gives the emphasis on the systematic and scientific method handling new problems as new area of research.

Duration: 1-Year
Intake Capacity: 6 (Six)

b) Ph.D.  in Statistics: To get entry in the Ph.D. programme one has to qualify in the entrance test for Ph.D. programme conducted by Gauhati University specific time.
Duration: Minimum of 3 Years, and Maximum of 5 Years.

Program Specific Outcomes for M.SC in Statistics

After the successful completion of this program:

PSO1: The students will be able to understand the mathematical basis of Statistical methods and practices.

PS O2 : Conduct a sample survey with proper sample design and analytical techniques.

PSO3: Apply the knowledge of distribution theory to model complex random phenomenon, and make valid inference on the population through the identification of an appropriate estimator for the unknown population parameter

PSO4: Identify the appropriate design of experiment that would enable data analysis in a valid manner.

PSO5: The students have developed their knowledge to explain a situation under the simultaneous effect of a number of random variables and conduct appropriate Multivariate analysis for it, formulate hypothesis appropriate to a situation under study and test its validity using a number of optimal tests, model the evolution of a random phenomenon over time through a Stochastic process and predict its long term behavior.

PSO6: The students can analyse key demographic variables like fertility, mortality and migration and examine how they influence the population growth, composition and structure of the population.

PSO7: They will also demonstrate proficiency for optimal decision making within the framework of Non Parametric and Bayesian decision theory,

PSO8 : Learn techniques for implementing model fitting through the theory of Regression, optimize the mathematical formulation of a real life situation through Linear Programming problem

PS 09: Describe the role of Statistics in National development.

PSO10: The Students will be able to to critically analyze a situation for practical application of Statistics and use their computational skills to solve practical problems.

PSO11: The students have acquired practical skills to implement algorithms in their domains of application through the use of computer softwares like MS EXCEL, R, C-Programming and SPSS.

PSO12: The students have acquired proficiency to describe the foundation, the advanced level and implement methods of analysis appropriate to their domains of specialization within Statistics.
