Dr. Mahanta did his masters in Economics from University of Gauhati in 1998. He obtained his Ph.D degree in Economics from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati in 2004. He joined Dibrugarh University as faculty member of Economics Department in 2003 and then in 2005 he joined in Economics Department of Gauhati University. During 2014-15, Dr. Mahanta went on to do postdoctoral research in risk and vulnerability at Sam Houston State University, Texas, USA. Dr. Mahanta is currently an Associate Professor in the Economics Department of University of Gauhati.
