Sanskrit

The Department of Sanskrit, one of the oldest Departments of the Gauhati University was established in the year 1957 with Late Professor Mukunda Madhava Sharma as the founder teacher. Starting with a handful of students the Department now prides itself with one hundred and forty regular seats in PG courses. Being the pioneer in the North- East Region the Department of Sanskrit has been pursuing M.A, M.Phil., Ph.D. degree programme. The Department has been given Special Assistance by the UGC (SAP) in the level of DRS I in the year 2011 in recognition to its academic excellence.

The Department offers three specializations namely Kāvya (literature), Veda and Darśana (philosophy) in PG courses. Proposals were placed in the eleventh plan for introduction of four more specializations such as i) Grammar ii) Pāli and Prākṛt iii) Dharmaśāstra and iv) Manuscriptology.

The Department has the credit of introducing the M Phil course as far back as 1989. The Department of Sanskrit has the credit of having its first Ph.D. Degree awardee in 1967 and uptill now as many as two hundred scholars have obtained the degree of Ph.D. of the Gauhati University.

The Department has been constantly engaged in popularizing and propagating Sanskrit studies. To preserve and propagate Sanskrit studies in Assam the Surabhārati Samsad, a socio-cultural-academic association was formed in the department in the year 1961. The purpose of this forum was to perform extra-curricular activities like arranging visits and talks by distinguished scholars in the department, to felicitate the scholars on their achievements, to organize debates, seminars-cum-symposia in Sanskrit and to train up the students for spoken Sanskrit and writing skill. The activities under this forum are still being continued.

The department has to its credit a number of alumni who have showed their excellence not only in teaching profession but in Administrative services, Judicial services, Archaeological, Directorate of Museum, Political arena etc. It should perhaps suffice to name, Justice Mukunda Kam Sarma, former Chief Justice of Delhi High court and at present the Chancellor of Lal Bahadur Sanskrit Viswavidyalaya, Prof Dipak Kumar Sharma, Vice-Chancellor of Kumar Bhaskar Varman Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, Nalbari, Prof Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, former Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, Silchar, Sri Dipak Kumar Sarma, Secretary to the Govt of Assam, Sri Sailen Das, ADC Govt of Assam, Dr Shaharuddin Ahmed, Assistant Curator of the Assam State Museum, Govt of Assam from the distinguished list our alumni.
