Library and Information Science

1. Brief Profile of the Department: The Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University is the first post graduate and premier department of library and information science in the entire North-East India established in 1966 as evening programme with the founder Librarian of Gauhati University, Dr. Jogeswar Sarma as Head-in-charge leading to Bachelor of Library Science (B.Lib.Sc.) degree. In the year 1979, one year Master of Library Science (M.Lib.Sc.) programme was introduced. In 1983, both B.Lib.Sc. and M.Lib.Sc. programmes become one year full time day programme, and in the year 1985 as per the UGC guideline, the programme was restructured as Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.L.I.Sc.) & Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.Sc.) programme with some changes in the syllabus. Since 1987 the Ph.D. programme is also introduced. From the academic session 2001-02, as per UGC guidelines two years integrated M.L.I.Sc. programme with four semester has been introduced in place of earlier one-year B.L.I.Sc and M.L.I.Sc prgramme. Keeping in mind about the changing trend of the society, the programmes were again revised from the 2007-08 academic session. This time more importance was given to the use of IT in libraries. In the year 2013-14 new revised syllabus with Credit and Grading system was introduced. Again in the year 2016, the department launched M.Phil. programme and in the year 2017 the M.L.I.Sc. and M.Phil. / Ph.D. syllabus was revised.

The endeavour of the department has been always to enrich, strengthen and support the students to give them opportunities and platform to learn and develop a mind of their own. The department is sure that many of our students would become strong tress of tomorrow and oxygenate the society by supporting the teaching and learning of the education system. 2. UGC NET Qualified Students: A large number of students from the department have qualified the UGC NET examination. You can find a selected list in GU DLIS UGC NET Qualified Students.

3. Fellowship Awarded to the Students: A large number of our students have qualified in the University Grants Commission (UGC) Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), whereas some others got the fellowship from Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR). 4. Research Projects
A list of research projects taken up by the faculty members of the department is available at GU DLIS Research Projects. A brief description of each projects is given below.
4.1 A research project for the period of 3 years w.e.f. 20th February, 1992 was sponsored by North Eastern Council (NEC) on “An Annotated Bibliography on the Socio-Cultural and Socio-Economic Conditions of the North-Eastern India” under the Principal Investigator Prof. Alaka Buragohain with a total grant of Rs. 4.95 Lakhs.
4.2 A research project for the period of 3 years w.e.f. 1st July, 2005 was sponsored by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) on “Rural Libraries in North East India: A Machine Readable Database” under the Principal Investigator Prof. Narendra Lahkar with a total grant of Rs. 3,75,175/-.
4.3 A research project for the period of 31st January, 2011 - 30th January, 2012 (1 Year) was sponsored by Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University on “Open Access E-Journal Portal of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University” under the Principal Investigator Dr. Badan Barman with a total grant of Rs. 1,00,000-.
4.4 A research project for the period of 30th March, 2013 - 29th March, 2016 (3 Years) was sponsored by Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University on “Applications of Information and Communication Technologies in Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University: A Road Ahead” under the guidance of Dr. Arupjyoti Choudhury, Dr. Ankuran Dutta and Dr. Badan Barman with a total grant of Rs. 12,46,000-.
4.5 A research project for the period of 30th March, 2014 - 29th March, 2015 (1 Year) was sponsored by Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University on “Old Examination Question Papers of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University: Making it Accessible to the Learners” under the Principal Investigator Dr. Badan Barman with a total grant of Rs. 1,49,000-.
4.6 A research project for the period of 3 years w.e.f. 1st July 2015 was sponsored by University Grants Commission (UGC) on “Establishment of Model North East India Library Network (NEILIBNET)” under the Principal Investigator Prof. Narendra Lahkar with a total grant of Rs. 10.20 Lakhs.
4.7 A research project for the period of 20th March, 2018 - 19th March, 2020 (2 Years) was sponsored by Gauhati University on “Academic Social Network of Gauhati University: A Platform to Connect Students, Research Scholars, Faculties, Staff and Alumni with a Single Thread” under the guidance of Dr. Badan Barman with a total grant of Rs. 1,50,000-.

7. Events Organized by the Department: The department organized a lot of events for the development of the professionals. A list of such programme is available at GU DLIS Event Organized. Besides this, the department annually celebrate the Dr. S. R. Ranganathan- the Father of Library Science in India’s birthday as the Librarians’ Day on 12th August, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhkrishnan’s birthday as Teachers’ Day on 5th September, Freshmen Social, Farewell to the outgoing students, Picnic, Library Visit of a Metropolitan City in India (3rd Semester) and Saraswati Puja.

8. Publications of the Department: The department is publishing the Journal of Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University annually. Besides, it also published a few seminar / conference proceedings and souvenirs and a publication on the occasion of silver jubilee. 9. Facilities Available at the Department
9.1 Computer Laboratory: The Department has a computer laboratory with LAN facilities and internet connectivity along with sufficient power-backup, printers and scanner. A total of 18 functional computers are there in the laboratory.
9.2 Seminar Library: The seminar library has a collection of 1085 books, a few journals and conference proceedings.
9.3 Classroom with LCD Projector: A dedicated seminar room is available that is well equipped with LCD projector and sound system.

1. Name of the Programme: Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc)
1.1 Duration of the Programme: 4-Semesters (2-Years)

1.4 About the Programme:The Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University is the first post graduate and premier Department of Library and Information Science in the entire North-East India established in 1966. From the academic session 2001-2002, as per University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines four semesters (2 years) integrated Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.Sc.) programme has been introduced in place of its earlier two semesters (1 year) Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.L.I.Sc.) and two semesters (1 year) Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.Sc.) programme. The first two semesters (1 year) of its present four semesters (2 years) Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.Sc.) programme can be considered as equivalent to the Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.L.I.Sc. or B.Lib.I.Sc.) programme of some other universities. 1.5 Specialty of the M.L.I.Sc. Programme
1.5.1 Bibliographic Project / Documentation Work: Students have to collect and systematically organize the records for bibliographies. It used to help in developing the writing and presentation skill to prepare bibliography.
1.5.2 Library / Field Visit: The Department organized a visit to modern libraries of a place outside the state preferably of a metropolitan city in India to acquire hands- on experience and observe the functioning of modem libraries. The visit is compulsory, and carries marks for internal assessment on the basis of the report submitted by the students.
1.5.3 Internship / Job Diary: Students of 4th semester have to compulsorily work in the library to have a hands-on-experience in the field and to make them work-ready. Based on their internship programme they have to prepare a “Job Diary”.
1.5.4 Dissertation: Students of 4th semester have to submit a dissertation on their topic of choice. It helps them to identify and formulate a research problem, write a good research proposal, solve a problem through proper scientific method of investigation and appropriate research methodology, apply appropriate tools, techniques, methods and statistics to collect and analysis of the data and develop writing, analytical and presentation skill.
1.5.5 Award to Topper in M.L.I.Sc.: The Silver Jubilee Cash Prize is awarded to the student securing the First Class First Position in the M.L.I.Sc. programme.
1.6 Admission Process:
1) As per the decision of the admission committee, submission of Admission Application Form for the M.L.I.Sc. programme will be done in the online mode only.
2) Students who apply for admission in the M.L.I.Sc. programme will be selected on the basis of their performance in the Entrance Test only for all students irrespective of any university they belong to as in the previous years.
3) The entrance test will be of 100 marks of 2 hours duration. Out of the total 100 marks, 80 marks will be in the form of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) to be answered in OMR sheet and 20 marks will be descriptive type questions. In the MCQs for every wrong answer there will be ¼ negative marks.
4) The Syllabus for the Entrance test will include General Knowledge, General Awareness, Indian and Assamese Literature and Language, Environment Science, General English, Mathematical Ability, Computer, Internet and Basic Concept of Library and Library and Information Science.
5) To appear in the entrance test kindly bring your Admit Card, Payment challan / money receipt, any one original photo identity card for verification and a recent passport size photograph.
6) The selection will be made on the basis of the marks secured in the entrance test only and as per rules of the University.
7) International students seeking admission at the Gauhati University are requested kindly to contact the international relations wing of the Gauhati University, the office of which is now housed at HRDC buildings, Gauhati University.
8) The reservation of seats will be as per the rules of the Gauhati University. In case of lack of qualified candidate in any of the reserved category, the seat will be transferred to general category.
9) A student who completed a P.G. programme from Gauhati University on an earlier occasion or got admitted into a P.G. Programme of Gauhati University, whether completed or not, will be considered for fresh admission irrespective of whatever quota he/she claims, if any, only when all fresh candidates including those from Waiting List and all statutory quotas including other quota like Extra Curricula, NCC, Fringe Village, etc. are admitted and seats remain vacant. Alternatively, he/she is not entitled to admission until the first timers are completely admitted subject to fulfilment of eligibility criteria. However, rule / resolution may be relaxed in case of professional programmes coming under the purview of regulatory bodies like AICTE, NCTE, BCI (programmes like MBA, M.Tech. LL.M., etc). 
10) Coupled with these, other rules of admission will remain intact (or as decided by the Admission Committee, Gauhati University) in preparing the provisional merit list.

 

2. Name of the Programme: M.Phil. in Library Science
2.1 Duration of the Programme: 1-Year

The Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University is one for the foremost and prestigious department in India that produces the dynamic administrator who leads the knowledge resource centres and libraries of many institute / organization in the entire North-East India and beyond. Almost all the alumni of the department hold very good and respectable position in many institutes.

Almost all the College Librarians of Assam, and some college librarians of neighbouring states are alumni of this department. Students have also found placement in Central Universities, State Universities, Indian Institute of Technology, Railway, All India Radio, Doordarshan Kendra, Botanical Survey of India.
