Departmental Profile:

The Department of Biotechnology, Gauhati University was established in the year 1993. Since then the Department is producing manpower in the area of Biotechnology and conducting research in different frontier areas of the subject. The faculty members are also actively involved in development of entrepreneurship in some of the potential areas of Biotechnology in the NE region. Over last one-decade, several major research projects submitted by the faculty members have been approved and funded by DBT, DST, GBPIHED, MoEF. UGC, ICMR, ASTEC,(Assam), NMPB, Govt. of Assam (SAP) and others. Major funds for infrastructure development of the Department were secured from DBT, DST (FIST Program) and Govt of Assam.

Mission:

To develop motivated professionals for facing global challenges in the field of Biotechnology and to create awareness among the society to harness the benefits of modern Biotechnological innovations.

Objective:

  • To conduct academic programmes for Post Graduate courses (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) in Biotechnology through up-to-date curricula for developing trained manpower in the areas of Miocropropagation Technology, Food Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Natural Product Chemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering, Neutraceuticals and Functional foods.
  • To carry out need-based research in different areas of Biotechnology, giving priority to areas like in-vitro multiplication and conservation of rare and endangered plants of the NE region, Bio- prospecting and bioassay of medicinal plants, Food Biotechnology specially fermented foods of the sub-Himalayan region, biopesticides, biofertilizers, petroleum biotechnology, cancer chemoprevention and probiotics.
  • Develop a regional database for medicinal plants and microbes, & conduct Biotechnology based extension and vocational programmes for common and needy section of the society.

Department has a well-defined Library facility containing books on different areas of Biotechnology.

Placement Profile:

Since the inception of the Department, students passing out have established themselves in the field of research and teaching in various national institutes such as RMRC, NEIST, MAMC, CDFD, NCL, IITG, and international institutes, including the University of Kansas and Seoul University.

Many students have established themselves in the industrial sector, in pharmaceutical companies including Chembiotek, Zydus Cadila, Dr. reddy’s labs, public organizations such as ONGC, OIL and in various food processing industries.

Theory examination will constitute 80 marks for End Semester examination and 20 marks as Internal Assessment mark to be assessed from 2 internal tests, one seminar and assignment. Total marks (Theory) = 100. Special paper practical examination will constitute 90 marks for End Semester practical examination and 10 marks for internal practical examination. Infrastructure facilities

The Department is housed in a two-storied building. Besides having class rooms and general laboratories, the department is equipped with Plant tissue Culture Labs, Animal Cell Culture Lab, Animal House, Food Biotechnology lab, Instrumentation room, green house facility, a Sectional Library and an auditorium.
