COMPUTER LABORATORY

The Statistics Department houses its own computer laboratory with 24 hours high speed, fiber optic Internet connection. There are as many as 40 computer terminals in the department. It facilitates all major open source Statistics software (both Linux and MS Windows). Through this connection one can access to full text electronic versions of current and previous issues of more than thousand international journals of different subjects. The department also has teachers specially interested in soft computing.

DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARY

Apart from the Central Library there is a departmental Library in the seminar hall of the department which has more than 1000 books, reports, journals, thesis, dissertation etc.

The students have excess to the library and can hire books during their classes. The books includes most of the major text books for M.Sc, encyclopedias, handbooks, statistical tables, rare books, some Central Statistical Organization (CSO) publications, Publications from the Government of India along with some latest and very expensive titles are also present.

POPULATION RESEARCH CENTRE

The Population Research Centre, Gauhati University was established during 1979 at full financial Grants-in-Aid provided on a year-by-year basis by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, New Delhi.

The main objective of the centre is to carry out research in the field of demographic and socio-economic aspects of population and Family Welfare in the North-Eastern Region of India. The population Advisory Committee lays down priority areas of research to be undertaken by the Population Research Center, Gauhati University on the basis of the broad Guidelines available from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

Apart from completing 59 evaluation studies of the Ministry of Health and family Welfare the centre has also collaborated with some state and national evaluation projects. Some of them are-

  • Evaluation of functioning of the ANM Training Schools in Manipur in 2006-07.
  • Role of Migration in the Demographic Situation of the North-Eastern States with National commission of Population, New Delhi, 2003.
  • End Line Survey of Assam Area Project, IPP-IX in Assam, 2001.
  • National Family Health Survey in 1992-93 with IIPS, Mumbai.
  • Evaluation Survey on Pulse Polio Immunization in Arunachal Pradesh in 1998 with UNICEF, New Delhi.A Situation Analysis of Women and Children in Assam in 1990 with UNICEF, Kolkata.
