Departmental Profile

The Department of Zoology was first constituted in 1963. It is one of the oldest and largest departments in the University of Gauhati , Assam , India . It has contributed immensely for the development of Zoological studies in the North Eastern Region of India. This Department is recognized by the NAAC peer team as one of the best science departments of the University. This Department has been selected as FIST sponsored Department under DST (Govt. of India), Ministry of Science & Technology for building up the infrastructure for postgraduate teaching and research. The UGC has supported the department with the SAP programme since 2002.

The in-position faculty of the Department has earned acclaim at the National and International level. The department has been publishing an annual journal Tropical Zoology regularly for the last several years. This department has dynamic association with some leading National & International organizations like WWF, WTI, NBFGR (ICAR), DCFR (ICAR) etc. The Faculty members of the Department has been actively engaged in promoting research in diverse fields of Fish & Fishery Science, Aquaculture, Biodiversity & Conservation Biology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Animal Physiology & Biochemistry, Animal Ecology and Wildlife Biology, Entomology, Environmental Biology since the time of its inception.

A New Campus has been developed with an area of about 10 acres of land within University campus for Aquaculture and Biodiversity center to carry out advance Research and training in the field. A total 09 pond has already been constructed along with facilities like Hatchery (Carp and Air breathing fishes), hatchling rearing unit, Aquaculture and Limnology laboratory etc (construction is in progress). The site is also having a separate area for construction of infrastructure and facilities for Biodiversity research and development.

The department has also introduced M. Sc. in Animal Ecology & Wild life Biology from 2012 in the form of self finance course with an intact capacity of 20 students to fulfill the need of human resources for conservation and judicious utilization of the Bio resources of N. E. India.

Our Vision:

  • To attain new horizon in teaching & research in Zoology, shaping Zoology department into a premier institution of the N. E. region in general and Assam in particular for creation of wealth and ensuring services to the society.
  • To contribute towards better quality of life for the people through development of Technology in sustainable bio-resources utilization and conservation
  • To conduct applied research in the field of Zoology for sustainable development.
  • To adopt new approaches & scientific measures for the conservation of biological diversity and bio resources of NE India.

To impart value based, creative, innovative & skill oriented teaching to the stakeholders not only in principal subject but also in allied subject like M. Sc in Animal Ecology & Wild Biology .

2. Research

To carryout innovative Research in various field of Zoology with special reference to regional importance and international standard.

HISTORY

The Department of Zoology, Gauhati University, established in 1963 is one of the leading Departments of the University and acclaimed both at national and international level. The Department has earned distinction in many areas of academic excellence and recipient of UGC SAP (DRS) - Phase-I & II as well as DST (FIST) programme. The department has produced eminent Zoologist, NET, GATE and SLET qualified candidates in addition to generation of trained human resources in different spheres of Zoological Science.

Academic Development

1. Besides normal P.G. teaching in the department, faculty members are seriously engaged in research programmes. On going projects and Ph. D. activities of the department are in very good shape. Lectures and seminars on various fields of the subject were been conducted very often round the year.

2.The P.G. syllabus has been revised and is implemented in the academic session

Laboratory facilities

The Department is having seven laboratories viz-

5. Physiology & Biochemistry Laboratory
6. Biodiversity and conservation Biology Laboratory
7. One general laboratory for the other semesters
Other than the said laboratories the department is having one Computer Lab, one cell culture lab and one Central Instrumentation Center.

Library & Computation

There is a Departmental Library with photocopying and computation facilities. A computer room with access to the internet is available for the use of students.
