History

The department through its inception has pioneered Sanskrit learning and research in Indology in North East India. Prof. M.M. Sharma was the founder teacher of the Department. Eventually two other teachers joined the Department in the same year. Initially there were only four students and in the second batch this number got reduced to two students. Gradually there began a steady increase in the number of students. By 1994 the intake capacity in the M.A. course became 50. At present the intake capacity is 65.

Originally there was provision for teaching only classical Sanskrit literature. In 1968, special papers on Vedic literature were introduce in the M.A. Final year Class. In 1971 Darsana literature was introduced as special paper.

Proposals were placed in the Ninth plan for introduction of three more special groups viz,

  • Grammer
  • Pail and Prakrt and
  • Dharmasastras (Kamrup School)

From the year 2001 semester system had been introduced in the Department. A syllabus had been prepared to suit the new system. As against eight papers (total marks 800) in the annual system of examination, the total number of papers had been raised from eight to 12 (total marks 1200). Therefore, in keeping with the syllabus of NET, the number of papers had been again raised to 16 (total marks 1600) in the year 2005.

The Department started M. Phil courses on Kavya, Veda and Darsana in 1990 with an intake of 10 students.

The first Ph.D was produced under this University in 1967.

The first D. Litt was produced under this University in 2001.
