Masters in Physics (M. Sc.) Programme (2 Years)

Each year, we give admission to 45 students, majority of which comes from the affiliated colleges. About 9 seats are filled up by students from outside universities, who have to qualify an entrance test. Prospective student can look forward to having an exciting career here with specialisation in seven major branches of mainstream physics to choose from. We offer specialisation in-

  • Advanced Condensed Matter Physics
  • Advanced Electronics
  • Astrophysics & Astronomy
  • Lasers & Advanced Spectroscopy
  • Nuclear Physics
  • Theoretical High Energy Physics
  • X-Ray Crystallography & Molecular Biophysics

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) Programme (3 to 5 Years)

About 10 students enroll to our PhD programme every year, which can be in any of our specialised subjects or other major areas (see the Thrust Areas). The minimum time for a PhD degree is three years, but almost all students take about five years to complete it. After the initial two years, the prospective PhD student has to deliver a Final Registration Seminar, where the student presents his work before a panel of expert members. The final degree is awarded after successful completion of the PhD thesis and an oral (the VivaVoce) examination by an external expert. Both the registration seminar and oral examination are open and in general attended by other research scholars, post graduate students, faculty members, and other interested persons.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Programme (1 Year): Tentative

We have proposed to offer an M. Phil. Degree which is to be introduced soon. It will be a one year advance physics programme with an emphasis on allied areas of physics. The proposed course contents include a dissertation covering some of the major works of the prospective students besides some mandatory written examinations. The course is aimed at people, willing to enhance their postgraduate experience and pursue a career in physics research.
