Department Profile

Department of Business Administration provides a two year post graduate degree course in Business Administration. It was started way back in the year 1978, the first of its kind in the entire region when the others have not even dared to think about it. Each failure, each obstacle, each stumbling block turned into a success story, becoming a symbol for the thousands of aspirants of this region. Today it is in the stage of proudly giving education to its 33rd batch.

The department offers 2 year full time MBA degree course in 4 semester curriculum and also in order to promote excellence in management it has launched the PhD programme in management since inception. The department offers dual specialization in Marketing, Finance, Human Resource and Production Management. The doctoral programme is designed to impart knowledge, develop skills and create attitudes relevant to teaching research and consulting.

The MBA programme is under the full sponsorship of UGC and recognition of AICTE. The department is ranked best among those of the north east as per the quality of education imparted by the distinguished faculty with interdisciplinary background from the premier institutes of the country and even outside the country. The department holds the institutional membership of professional bodies like AIMS and AMDISA.

Mission

To develop in the students an analytical mind-set, in-depth professional knowledge, passion for achievement and a socially responsive outlook, which will ensure all round development of the nation.

Objectives

1) To grow into an institute of excellence in imparting management education in this part of the country.

2) To cater to the rapidly growing needs for managerial manpower through provisions of well designed and well directed programme of professional education.

3) To generate alternative solution to management problems in general, and problems faced by business houses in the country through organized programmes of research, consultancy and publication.

The MBA programme at Gauhati university is a two year ,full-time programme ,approved by AICTE ,the program aims to groom students into competent professional managers with:

Industry Integrated Programmes

GauhatiUniversity has launched an innovative and unique Industry Integrated Regular Programmes in management under Department of Business Administration, Gauhati University from 2009-10 session onwards. The University offers these programmes in collaboration with NIAM Educational Foundation , New Delhi. NIAM provides On- the- Job Training at various Industries and In- House- Training to students of MBA (Industry Integrated) and BBA (Industry Integrated) regular programmes through approved Academic Partners of Gauhati University, Guwahati.

MBA (Industry Integrated) programme

MBA (Industry Integrated) program can benefit fresh graduates with minimal knowledge of business organizations and industrial working environment. During the pursuance of the program the students get the opportunity to understand their skill-sets, learn industry working methods and accommodate the expectations of the industry.

Eligibility

For MBA (II) programme:
  • A Bachelors Degree in any discipline with a minimum of 45% aggregate marks from a University recognized by UGC / Gauhati University.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is desired for successful pursuit of the programme.
For BBA (II) programme:
  • 10+2 in any stream with a minimum of 40% marks.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is desired for successful pursuit of the programme.
Admission Procedure for MBA (II):
  • Written Test followed by Group Discussion and Personal Interview.
  • Relaxation for MBA (IIP)- Students who have appeared in All India Common Entrance Exam viz. CAT, MAT, ATMA, XAT or any other national level exam and scored marks not less than 50 percentile are exempted from appearing in the written test conducted by the Gauhati University.
Admission Procedure for BBA (II):
  • Students would be admitted to the BBA (II) programme on the basis of their marks in 10+2 examination and performance in Group Discussion and Personal Interview.

ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT DURING THE EIGHT YEARS (POST 2002):

Pioneering research work in the application of Fuzzy, Neural Net, Neural-Fuzzy, Genetic Algorithm, VSM to business problems. Rated highly by the clients on consultancy assignments. Consulted for high profile organizations like world Food Program (UNS), UNDP, Word Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, IOCL, Asian Development Bank etc.
Pioneering research work in computerized manufacturing systems.
Highest revenue generating department of the University. The department has generated Rs 332.7 lakhs(2009-2010) and estimated earnings for 2010-2011 Rs. 477.5 lakhs.
Has initiated the Collaborative Executive MBA for NRL executives-The course has already started in May 2010 and is in collaboration with Numaligarth Refinery Ltd(NRL). Under this programme,the department in collaboration with NRL is developing customized syllabus, case studies and course materials, with special emphasis on oil sector. Over 60 executives are enrolled in the first batch.
Creation of the MBA(IIP)-Industry integrated programme where there is a tri-partite arrangement with industry partners providing on the job training and academic partners provides classrooms and faculty support for theoretical inputs and under the aegis of the Department of Business Administration, GU.
The Department in collaboration with the Department of Economics, Gauhati University has also launched Master of Business Economics (MBE) programme in 2009.This course will be upgraded to Master of Financial Engineering and Economics in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and Department of Mathematics. This will be the Integrated-programme of Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science and Management.
The Department in Collaboration with Faculty of Technology, Gauhati University, has also designed the five year B.Tech-MBA integrated Programme.
Recipient of top honours at Prerana, the International Summer Project contest for Eight consecutive years and won the first prize.
