MISSION AND VISION STATEMENT

Folklore Research Department relates its course to North-east India where cultural instability and decay of traditional knowledge is rampant any student interested in learning folk arts and knowledge can join this course This course will create activism and knowledge for the cause of cultural rights of the weaker groups and empower the communities by spreading awareness.

Folklore as a discipline pays attention to alternative systems and views. For this reason it can play very significant role in preservation of cultural diversity and protection of human rights. Moreover, it studies artistic forms and aesthetics. Beauty laden in folklore as symbols and meanings projects human feelings and values. Alternative paradigms of development, science, nature and life can help mankind to overcome problems of extractive models of natural sciences. The department creates condition of human peace and contributes to the environment of local cultures. The department aspires to restore value and appreciation of folklore and culture of diverse human groups.

Today smaller cultural groups are facing threat to their cultures. This is an important problem of human security. In this context, the department proposes to:

  • Establish the value of folk arts, literature, music and folk science of the region,
  • Document, promote and interpret them,
  • integrate theoretical study with the problems faced by the communities in case of their folklore and cultural existence and
  • frame action programmes for promotion of smaller cultures in the era of globalization. The department in its curriculum and research pursues these tasks.

It evaluates the condition of folklore security not only as a dimension of human security but also as a matter of cultural rights. The recognition of cultural forms of the weaker groups restores their self-respect and therefore such activities are part of the perspective plan of the department. Cultural preservation, growth, tourism, cultural rights ,human security ,participation of the folklorists in rights based development are some of the concerns of the department.
