The students of MSc Electronics Science must also undergo an Industrial training of two months duration at an institute selected considering the relevance of its activities with the course. The institutes where students from the department have undergone industrial training includes BSNL, OIL, IOC, AAI, ECIL, AIR, Calcutta University, TIL, BRPL Semiconductor Complex, Chandigarh etc. Normally students are asked to perform some project based work during their stay in the training sites. Most of the time the students receive cooperation from the personnel available in the sites which contributes towards gathering on-site experience and knowledge. At the end of the training the students are required to prepare a report which is to be verified and approved by an Officer-in
Charge of Training Programmes of the concerned organization before submission to the department. The training is usually completed during the June-July months after the students have atleast completed the course work of two semesters.
The project work carried out during the fourth semester is a design and development based work with stress on innovation. Most design works are executed in a multiphase manner. First, the theoretical aspect is handled in detail. Secondly, the associated blocks and circuit components are defined. Next, a computer-based simulation of most of the works is performed through which the component values and types are selected. Finally, the work is given a practical shape and results obtained. The results thus recorded are compared with those found from computer based simulation. Some of the recent works carried out are related to the basic topics of the courses taught while some are research oriented. The project works are carried out under supervisors who are, usually, faculty members of the department. At the end of the project work, a detailed report has be to prepared and submitted to the department. The students are required to defend their work in a presentation in front of a panel consisting of external and internal examiners. External evaluation is usually done by experts invited form Calcutta University, Delhi University, IIT Guwahati, Gauhati University, Assam Engineering College etc.
Students are also exposed to a series of lectures related to different managerial aspects of industry during their fourth semester course. Experts from industries or the university are asked to prepare and deliver lectures on topics related to labour and personal management, project handling and consultancy, industry-academics bondage etc.
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) Programme
As per the general notification of the university, the department also offers research programmes leading upto the Ph. D. degree in the following broad areas-
- Web Technology
- High Energy Cosmic Rays
- Nano-Technology and Quantum Dots
- Instrumentation and Control
- Opto-Electronics and Optical Sensor
- Thin Films and Electronic materials
