Departmental Profile
Post graduate commerce department, which catered to the need of higher education in commerce in the region, still continues to be center of attraction not only for the students of the North East Region but also for students outside the region.
The UGC has identified this Department along with five other Universities of the country as a center of excellence and brought this department under the UGC’s Departmental Special Assistance (DSA) Programme.
Objectives
The Objectives of the Department of Commerce are-
- To impart instruction to the Under Graduate and Post Graduate students offering Commerce as a course of study.
- To enable our products to have a substantial and dignified source of livelihood after completion of their education in the Department.
- To play a stewardship role by the faculty members in guiding and helping the sister universities located in other parts of the country.
- To develop and restructure course curriculum so as to suit the demand of the changing situation.
- To achieve academic excellence in teaching, learning and extension activities through the utilization of local resources.
- To pursue research and investigation in the field of trade and commerce for policy formulation and implementation.
- To develop the teachers through Refresher courses, Orientation Programme and other Faculty Development Programmes.
- To develop skill and problem solving aptitude of the students in the field of Business Studies.
- To man professional occupations, entrepreneurship, consultancy works in the area of accounts keeping, tax matters, trade facilities, capital market operations, etc.
History
Gauhati University was established on 26th January 1948. It was also in the year 1948 that the under graduate and post graduate commerce classes were started in this University. I. Com., B. Com., and two year Diploma course in Secretarial Practice were introduced in the under graduate classes. . I. Com. and B. Com. Classes were held in the New Arts Building of the Cotton College and Secretarial Practice Classes were held in the Don Bosco School Building. The then Vice Chancellor, K.K. Handique, took initiative to start the under graduate classes in the University as there was no arrangement to teach the newly introduced I. Com., B. Com. classes in the college (except in J.B. College, Jorhat).

Computer Lab
The Department has a Computer lab with 33 computers and with Internet facility open for faculty, research scholars and students.
Library
A Departmental Library with more than 6000 books and 3 regular magazines are available for consultation.
Commercial Museum
The Department has a Commercial Museum with more than 500 objects.
