Activities Of The Department

Funding Agencies (Gauhati University, Other Government Funding Agencies and Industry)

The major research grants received by the department are-

  • Rs. 28 lakhs from UGC in 1977
  • DRS prject grant (under SAP programme of UGC) of Rs. 25 lakhs in 1990 (Phase I of DRS), Rs. 34 lakhs in 1995 (phase II of DRS), and Rs 30 lakhs in 2000 (phase III of DRS)
  • Rs. 56 lakhs under the COSIST project of UGC
  • Rs. 35 lakhs in 2001 under the FIST programme of DST.

In addition, the total financial outlay in individual projects under various other projects to faculty members is about Rs. 2 crore, these grants were received in the last five years from UGC, DST, CSIR, DBT, DAE and the petroleum and paper industries. The main collaborative projects in the department are on the environmental impact analysis on Guwahati and Digboi refineries, and international collaboration on water-soluble vitamins as treatment of acne (with Dr. A. B. Barua of Iowa State University, USA). More than one crore rupees worth of sophisticated scientific equipments were purchased with these funds in the last ten years. Several computers were installed in the department and Internet and internet facilities were installed in 2005.

Society for Chemical Education

A society namely "Society for Chemical Education" was formed in the year 1991 under the leadership of Dr. P. K. Sarma. The aim of the society is to popularize chemistry and work for chemistry education. Subsequently, the society has launched a half-yearly bilingual journal called Chemistry Education ( ) for student community and common people. Moreover, few popular science books were also published by this society.
