    Courses:

The Department offers a two-year M.A. course in Assamese.
Earlier, the Post-Graduate Course was divided into two groups- Group A (Literature) and Group B (Language). Students of each group had to appear in 8 (eight) papers. While the Study of Culture was common to each group, a few of the papers were optional.  The optional papers covered the entire range of the literary and the linguistic phenomena around the globe, with particular reference to such phenomena of/in Assam. The syllabus was revised from time to time to keep pace with the changing trends in language, literature and culture.

With the introduction of the semester system for the Post-Graduate Course in 2001, the students of each group were to appear in 16 (sixteen) papers in four semesters, i.e., in four papers per semester. The syllabus made for the semester system included several new components such as Cultural Studies with particular reference to Assam, the Study of the Tibeto-Burman Languages, Dialectology, Comparative Literature, a general outline of Indian literature as a whole, Western Literature, and Western Influence on Assamese Literature among others. The syllabus prepared in 2001 was revised and updated in 2007. In 2008, the Credit-Grading system was introduced. The syllabus has been revised and re-modeled in 2009.

The Credit Grading system covers the Master of Arts (M.A.) Programme (previously called ‘Course’) in Assamese in 4 (four) Semesters. The total marks for the Programme (to be completed in four semesters) is 1600 of which 80% (= 1280) is external and 20% (=320) is internal. Each Semester has 5 ‘Courses’ (previously called ‘Papers’). Each Course is of 80 marks. 80% (=64) of the total marks of a Course is external and 20% (=16) of the total marks of the Course is internal.  This means, each question paper in an examination will be of 64 marks. The remaining 16 marks will be calculated internally.

The Internal Assessment marks for each Course will be calculated as shown below:

    (i) Sessional Examinations------------ 8 marks.
    (ii) Seminar(s)---------------------------4 marks.
    (iii) Home Assignment(s)------------- 4 marks.
    …………………………………………………
                                                                Total-----         16 marks

All Courses except 3-04, 3-05, 4-02, 4-03, 4-04 and 4-05 are common for all students. Courses 3-04, 3-05, 4-02, 4-03, 4-04 and 4-05 are optional. Students will have to study either 3-04A, 3-05A, 4-02A, 4-03A, 4-04A and 4-05A or 3-04B, 3-05B, 4-02B, 4-03B, 4-04B and 4-05B. Those who study the first group mentioned above will be considered as having ‘Specialization in Assamese Literature’ (or ‘Specialization in Group-A’). In the same way, the students who study the second group mentioned above will be considered as having ‘Specialization in Assamese Language’ (or ‘Specialization in Group-B’).
Credit Point for each Course will be 8 (eight).
