The department of Foreign Languages was established in 1968 with the introduction of one-year certificate course in Russian

The department of Foreign Languages was established in 1968 with the introduction of one-year certificate course in Russian. In 1971 a one-year certificate course in French was introduced. In later courses Diploma courses in French & Russian were introduced.

In view of the changing time and the world, in the new age of globalization and information technology the dept. endeavors to emphasis more on inter disciplinary approach and transform this dept. into a centre for study of Foreign Languages. As such the dept. has started encouraging scholars from other disciplines to join in research programmes conduced by the department. Presently, the dept. offers Ph. D. programmes for scholars interested I Comparative Language, Literature and Cultural Studies.

We are proud to note that this is the only centre in North-East of India for teaching and research of Foreign Languages, Literature, and Culture.

Objectives of the P.G. Diploma Course:

to improve the competence acquired in the first year (certificate course) with regard to the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing

to enable the learners to use situationally appropriate functions and to improve and consolidate communication skills in the language.

to expose the learners to same aspects of the life and the culture of the French people and of some of the French speaking places/countries.
