History

Gauhati University Model School (English Section - Montessori) has its roots in the original G U Model School - the Assamese Medium High School of Gauhati University. The need for an english medium school in the locality was deeply felt, and to cater to this demand G U Model School (English Section - Montessori) came into existence on 17th of March 1963. It had its humble beginings with 40-odd students and three classes only - Nursery, Baby KG, and Lower KG. It functioned as a Morning School under the same roof as Model High School till 1966 when it was shifted temporarily to a residential quarter (Qtr No 85) of Gauhati University. It was housed here for well over twelve years before being permanently shifted in 1978 to the present building. Ms Constance Anlre was the founder teacher and Mistress-in-charge of this English Section. Her able guidance and contribution gave the school a firm hold. To assist her, she had under her fold, Mrs Rekha Baruah and Mrs Husna Begum. A few years later, in 1966, Mrs Dipali Misra also joined. From 1966, Mrs Husna Begum became the Mistress-in-charge and later in 1971 "Mistress-in-charge" came to be re-disignated as Head mistress which Mrs H Begum hold till her retirement in December 1997. With the passage of time, this school has been serving its purpose well, a model school in every sense of the word.
